25 JUNE 2022 /4-6.30 pm / MARU MARU HOTEL / ZANZIBAR

A PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN DEUTSCHE WELLE AKADEMIE, STEPS AND FILM LAB ZANZIBAR
Documentary film is a bastion for new creative ideas with lots of unexplored potential in East Africa. Due to their cinematic form, documentaries can offer a space for critical reflection on political, cultural and social matters, which is especially important in areas with restricted media freedom. We need exciting stories, which can capture the reality of life and that makes us understand, wonder and make change.
The panel opens with a screening of KATANGA NATION by Beza Hailu Lemma & Hiwot Admasu Getaneh, Ethiopia, South Africa, | 2022 | 27 min.
The panel discussion addresses the current state and the potential of the documentary format in the region. Don Edkins presents the film and Tiny Mungwe moderates the panel – they are both producers from Steps, South Africa. Our panelists are all experienced practitioners in the documentary field in East Africa:
Zippy Kimundu/ Director, Peter Mudamba/ Docubox and Emily Wanja/ Producer – all from Kenya, together with Austin Nyambok / DocA and Martin Mhando, CEO ZIFF, Tanzania.
